Last Saturday night arrived Capt. Samuel Sterry, in the sloop Dolphin, from Hispaniola, which was one of the vessels lately seized there, but acquired with considerable loss. Capt. Proceedings of the town of Preston
At a town meeting legally warned and held on Monday the 13th day of June, 1774, in the town of Preston. This meeting taking into consideration the dangerous situation of the British colonies in North America, from the principles lately adopted by the Parliament of Great Britain, by inflicting pains and penalties on the town of Boston without a legal trial or even notice of fault ... voted, that if it should be thought best, by said Congress, &c. to break off all trade with Great Britian, &c. as the best means to attain said end; that (although we are not a sea port town, yet) we will charfully deny ourselves of all those asdvantages that arise to us from the said trade ... A true copy, attest Roger Sterry, Town Clerk

An Eccentric Maine Man
He makes a Fortune in New Orleans and Leaves two Wives to Quarrel Over It.
John L. Sterry, who died in New Orleans, Jan. 4, leaving an estate of half a million, went from this state 40 years ago. He speculated wisely and lived the life of a recluse. Eleven months before his death he married Caroline Dahle, a young woman, 18 years of age, and a resident of New Orleans. He made during the last few days of his illness, a short will leaving to his young wife $10,000 and the house in which they lived, with its contents. There was no disposition of the remainder of his property. A day or two after the funeral a search of the house disclosed the astonishing fact that $20,000 in cash was concealed in his secretary behind some old books and that in other parts of the house were papers, mortgages, and bonds whose value will reach about $150,000. In an old box thirty premium bonds to the aggregate amount of $15,000 were found. Mr Sterry left one brother and one half-brother in Maine, and other relatives in northern Ohio and Chicago.

Pittsfield Advertiser, Pittsfield, Maine - Thursday , August 31st, 1905 Page : 4
Death of Wm. Leavitt
The people of Detroit were startled Wednesday of last week by news of the sudden death of William Ichabod Leavitt from heart failure at the home of his niece, Mrs Leone Brown, in Detroit, which occurred at 9 o'clock. Although his health had been poorly for several months and he has had a number of ill attacks still no serious results were anticipated. He had just heard of the daeth of Mr Doble, a life long friend, and had ordered by his wife some fragrant tokens of his friendship for Mr Doble scarcely an hour before. He then went into his yard whence he was found by his wife a few minutes later in a semi-conscious state having fallen over a grindstone in the yard. He was brought into the house and Dr Byron Porter of Newport, who was passing by was called in but in the few minutes intervening Mr Leavitt had quietly passed away.

Mr Leavitt eas one of a family of eight children of George B. and Mary Leavitt and was born in the home at Plymouth, in the year 1841 and has been a resident of that town ever since. He was educated in the common and High schools of Plymouth and has been a successful farmer and business man ever since his maturity up to within the last three years of his life. He was married twice. The first marriage was to Sarah Stackpole of Plymouth by whom he has four duahgters, only one of whom is now living, Mrs E B Sewall of Detroit. In 1887 after the decease of his first wife he married Julia Sterry of Starks with whom he has live for the past 17 years and who has during the last few years devoted her entire time and energy to making his remaining days happy and contented.

Mr Leavitt, although not a politician held some of the offices which are only given to men of ability having served with conspicuous ability in the Maine House of Representatives the class which included his home town of Plymouth in 1804; was electe to the office of county commissioner, where he served for six years with honor to himself and great credit to his constituency. He also served as a selectman of Plymouth for a number of years and his name was inreparably connected with the business transactions of that section of the state ...

Mr Leavitt was a member of Plymouth Lodge F. and A. M. Plymouth a member of Stevens' Chapter Royal Arch Masons of Newport. He was acharter member of Old Hickory lodge, No 105, I.O.O.F., and a member of Paran Encampment, No 36, also of Bangor Council, P and S M.

The funeral took place at Mrs Leone Brown's home in Detroit at 2 PM Thursday ... The interment was at Riverside in the family lot by the side of his former wife.

It may be noted here that of a large family his daughter Mrs Sewall of Detroit is the only survivor. Mr Leavitt was a life-long Republican.

Because he published an article in the Christian Enquirer declaring that the God of the Bible "preferred the savoury smell of roast cutlets to the odors of boiled cabbage," Ernest V. Sterry at Toronto, Canada, was found guilty by a Canadian judge of blasphemous libel under an ancient British statute making it a crime to criticize the Christian God. Sterry's defense was that he was merely trying to liberalize public opinion and that he thought his article would clear the controversy over the personality of the Deity.

Somerset Trio Confess Many Store Breaks
A long series of mysterious breaks which have baffled authorities in three counties for the past two months were believed solved at Skowhegan when three Anson young men confessed. They were James Brooks, Wallace Brooks and Arnold Baker, all under 28 years of age ... With their arrests came the recovery of uch of the stolen loot including $66 in cash, clothing, cigarettes, beer and numerous other articles. All except the money was found hidden in the corner of a cellar under a vacant house in Anson. The money was in a car used by the trio.

The recovery of the stolen goods and the arrests both occurred at Skowhegan on December 16. Officials who figured in the investigation, recovery of the stolen goods and subsequent arrests were Sherrid Gallant, Police Officer Everett Steen of Pittsfield, Deputy Sheriff Hollis Jacobs of Pittsfield, Deputy Sheriff Harold S Spiller of Madsion and Deputy Sheriff Carroll Sterry of Anson.

... the trio pleaded guilty ... and were committed to the county jail at Skowhegan ...

Prof. Albert E Carpenter, the mesmerist, charged with the rape of Miss E Sterry, was brought into the District Court in Worcester, Tuesday morning, for a preliminary examination. The Court room was crowded to suffocation, and many ladies were in the audience. Carpetner was brought in handcuffed, and attended by his agent and friends from Boston, including Dr Storer and others. Miss Sterry, a pleasant-looking young woman of 22 years, was the first put on the stand. She repeated essentially the story first published as her version of the affair, laying stress on the invisible, indescribable power and influence which led her to visit Carpenter. She testified to having repeatedly sat on Carpenter's lap, and remembered three times when he assaulted her person. The young woman was subjected to severe cross-examination by John R. Thayer, the prisoner's counsel. Carpenter was held in $10,000 to await the action of the Grand Jury.

Divorce for Nellie Daly
Chief Justice Aiken heard an interesting case in his court on Monday. It was one in which an actress accused her husband of playing his part in too realistic a fashion on the stage, and being guilty of cruel and abusive treatment towards her. The libellant was a member of the famous Daly family of actors, Mrs Mary E. Sterry, whose stage name is Nellie Daly. She told the court that she and her husband were employed on the stage together, the husband, Charles A. Sterry, being angaged to take the part of an intoxicated man.
Both were acrobats, and had played in Hanlon's "Superba," and later in "The Babes in Toyland." The husband, according to the libellant's statement, took precautions to introduce realism into his work by getting intoxicated, and as a consequence he hndled her about the stage and did the acts so roughly that she was constantly thrown all over the stage by him.
Witnesses who were called corroborated her story. His honor gave a degree nisi, with custody of the boy to the mother.

STERRY WILL FIGHT TURNS ON PYJAMAS
Wealthy Drug Man's Habit of Wearing Many or None Cited as Eccentric
New Brunswick, N. J., June 22 - Testimony designed to show that James W. Sterry, wealthy drug man of New York, was mentally incapacitated at the time his will was executed was introduced before Judge Peter. F. Daly today when Mrs Selina M. Carter swore to numerous eccentricities of Mr. Sterry. Among other things Mrs. Carter said that Mr. Sterry frequently wore several pairs of pajamas at one time and on other occasions disported himself before her nude. Today's hearing was on an appeal from the probate of the will instituted by Elizabeth S. Sterry, the widow. Mr Sterry died January 3 last at Metuchen.

Mrs Carter was the first witness. She described herself as a married woman with a family and said she was superintendent of apartment houses in New York. As such she has charge of the property at 145 West Twelfth street, where Mr Sterry sublet rooms from a Mrs. Stoddard. The witness said her acquaintance with Mr. Sterry covered a period from October, 1911 to January, 1912.

"I came to the conclusion that he was 'nutty' the second time I saw him," she testified. "The first time I met him he handed me a $5 bill without any cause. I refused it, and then he offered me some fruit, which I also declined."

"Mr Sterry never seemed to care whether I was in his room or not," the witness went on, "and he jumped in and out of bed, sometimes with his clothes on and at other times absolutely nude. This was right in the daytime, while I would be cleaning his room. At times he tried to put on a half dozen pairs of pajamas at one time. I've seen him with four pairs at once and pulling his trousers on over all these underclothes. At other times he tried to put his feet in his coat sleeves."

The contestant, who was cut off without a penny by her husband, was married to Sterry in 1911, but soon afterward sued for a separation. Sterry's answer was that his marriage was illegal, alleging that Mrs. Sterry had not been properly divorced from her first husband, Albert S. Rennie. In January 1913, Justice Newburger ordered a new trial of the Sterry suit, which was pending when Sterry died.

For many months prior to James W. Sterry's death he has lived in absolute retirements in a friend's home at Metuchen. Sterry's father, head of the drug firm of Weaver & Sterry, was killed in his private office about five years ago by George E. Sterry, Jr., his son. The early Sterry's fortune was the object of a long legal fight by Mrs George E. Sterry, Jr., who demanded a share of the estate. The case finally was settled out of court.

From the New York Comm. Advertiser, Feb 3
The body of Major Robert Sterry, late American Consul at Rochelle, who was lost from the ship Helen, lately wrecked at Sagharbo, was found on Wednesday of last week. A Providence paper, in announcing the death of Major Sterry, states, that "he was a native of Providence, and only son of Cyprian Sterry, Esq. He was graduated at Brown University, and previous to the late war was an officer in the U.S. Army. For several years past, he had resided at Rochelle, as American Consul for that port. His lamented doom affords an emphatic lesson on the vanity of earthly hopes. He perished in the pride of manhood, (having just completed his 38th year) within view of his native land and while the flush of anticipated joy in rejoining his friends was yet warm upon his cheek."
